Why go

  • Costumed opéra bouffe from three Offenbach works
  • Tenor Frédéric Diquero in Les Contes d'Hoffmann
  • Intimate Anglican church setting, central Cannes

There is something quietly subversive about staging Offenbach inside a church. The composer spent much of his career dismantling the pomposity of Second Empire Paris — its grand gestures, its self-regard — with wit sharp enough to draw blood. Yet on the evening of Saturday 3 October 2026, the Église Holy Trinity on avenue Branly will host exactly that: a two-part programme that moves from broad comic theatre to something altogether more unsettling, all within the same stone walls.

The venue itself sets a particular tone. Holy Trinity is Cannes's Anglican church, a nineteenth-century building that has served the town's considerable English-speaking community for well over a century. Its nave is intimate without being cramped, its acoustics suited to the human voice rather than amplification. On a warm early-autumn evening on the Côte d'Azur — the light still golden at six-thirty, the Esterel hills turning rust in the distance — it makes for an unlikely but persuasive opera house.

The Comic Half: Three Works, One Stage

Opér'Azur, the ensemble behind the evening, has constructed the first part of the programme from excerpts of three Offenbach opéras bouffes: La Belle Hélène, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, and Monsieur Choufleuri. These are not presented as a concert selection but as a costumed scenic spectacle — a coherent theatrical piece built from the material of three separate works. The choice is telling. La Belle Hélène (1864) sent up classical antiquity with cheerful irreverence; La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867) mocked military vanity so effectively that Bismarck reportedly attended multiple performances; Monsieur Choufleuri is a shorter, sharper piece satirising bourgeois cultural aspiration. Together they form a portrait of Offenbach at his most socially observant — music that smiles while it argues.

The twenty artists on stage — soloists and members of the Ensemble Vocal Opér'Azur — are directed by Guy Bonfiglio and conducted by Bruno Membrey. The ensemble is based on the Côte d'Azur and has made a particular project of bringing lyric theatre to non-traditional spaces along this stretch of coast, where the audience for classical music tends to be both knowledgeable and demanding.

The Second Half: Hoffmann's Shadows

Then the programme turns. Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Offenbach's final opera — left unfinished at his death in 1880, premiered posthumously in 1881 — belongs to an entirely different emotional register. Where the opéras bouffes work through parody and exaggeration, Les Contes moves through romantic obsession, illusion, and loss. The poet Hoffmann pursues three loves across three acts; each proves, in its own way, to be unreachable.

'Offenbach always knew that the distance between laughter and grief was shorter than his audiences wanted to believe.'

The role of Hoffmann in the second part will be taken by tenor Frédéric Diquero. Casting a named soloist in this part of the programme is significant — Les Contes demands a voice capable of carrying both lyric tenderness and dramatic weight, sometimes within the same phrase. The church setting, which might seem eccentric for comic opera, becomes almost logical here: the work's atmosphere of haunted interiors and flickering unreality suits a space that already carries its own history.

What to Expect on the Night

The performance begins at 18h30. Tickets are priced at €20 full price and €15 reduced (including children). The address is 2 avenue Branly, 06400 Cannes — a short walk from the Palais des Festivals and the Croisette, which means the evening fits naturally into a longer stay in the city.

For visitors who know Cannes primarily through its film festival or its luxury hotels, an evening like this offers a different register of the town: quieter, more local in feel, rooted in the musical life that continues here year-round regardless of which cameras are pointing at the seafront. Autumn on the Côte d'Azur has its own particular quality — the crowds have thinned, the light has shifted from high summer's bleach to something richer, and the cultural calendar fills with exactly this kind of event.

The programme runs approximately two hours in total, though the precise duration has not been confirmed. Arrive with enough time to find your seat and, if the evening is fine, to stand outside for a moment on avenue Branly before the doors open — the neighbourhood is residential and calm, and the church itself is worth a moment's attention before the music begins.
