There is a particular quality to the light in the Var in late July — thick, golden, unhurried — that seems to ask something of the people moving through it. Slow down. Listen. It is precisely this quality that Cie Souffleuses d'Âmes has built a festival around. Les Renc'ARTs Contes et Musique de l'Été 2026 is not a single venue, not a single evening, but a roving series of encounters that threads its way across the inland Var from 30 July to 25 August, pausing at domaines, medieval villages, a chapel, a hilltop garden, and the Roman town of Fréjus itself.
The company describes its programme under the banner 'Terre de paroles, terre de rencontres' — land of words, land of meetings — and the phrase holds. Each stop on the circuit pairs a performance or a guided storytelling walk with something convivial: a wine tasting, a shared meal, a glass at a guinguette, an evening of stargazing. The format is deliberately unhurried. You arrive at a place, a storyteller begins, and the landscape becomes part of the narrative.
The Art and the Artists
Three storytellers carry the summer. Claudia Mad'moiZèle anchors most of the season, moving between four distinct programmes. 'Sur les chemins du monde' is a family-facing set — songs and legends drawn from cultures across the globe, accessible from age six — which plays at the hilltop village of Tourtour in partnership with the Festival Perché (8 €, 30 July and 21 August). Her 'Contes Dits-Vins' is an adults-only evening of tales, poetry, and song woven around wine and the people who make it; two editions take place at Fréjus in partnership with Domaine Jas des Oliviers, at 15 € including a tasting (31 July and 14 August). 'Murmures de tambour' draws on percussion, world instruments, and the spirit of specific places — it appears at Méounes-les-Montrieux, at Domaine de l'Olivette, and on 22 August inside the Chapelle Saint-Félix in Garéoult, where entry is free and a verre de l'amitié follows.
Isabelle Pratali joins from week four. Her 'Une poignée de contes' gathers tales of love and wisdom 'like grains of sand from every country,' as the company puts it, while 'Contes Haut-Vol' draws on Boccaccio's Decameron — stories of the human heart told under the open sky of the Var rather than plague-era Florence. On 21 August, the two storytellers share the stage at Domaine d'Avalon in Lorgues for 'Contes à deux voix,' a joint programme at 12 €. Patricia Lionnel closes the festival in its final days with 'Conte en corps,' a form in which movement and narration meet: a storytelling walk through Les Arcs-sur-Argens on 24 August and a session at Méounes-les-Montrieux on 25 August, both at 12 €.

The Places
The itinerary is, in itself, a small tour of Var heritage. Les Arcs-sur-Argens is a compact medieval bourg set above the Argens valley, its lanes of pale stone unchanged in outline for centuries — the storytelling walk on 7 August moves through those exact lanes in partnership with Les Médiévales des Arcs. Gassin, one of the most elevated villages in the Saint-Tropez peninsula, provides the backdrop for 'Contes sous les étoiles' on 9 August at the Jardin de Gassin: a 35 € evening that combines a meal, storytelling, and an astronomical observation. Montrieux-le-Hameau, set within a landscape of garrigues and oak forest in the hills behind Toulon, hosts three separate sessions at the Domaine de Montrieux, each followed by time at the estate's guinguette. Fréjus — founded as Forum Julii by Julius Caesar, later a significant Roman naval base, and today a town where an amphitheatre and an episcopal baptistery sit within walking distance of each other — hosts the opening Var event of the season on the evening of 31 July.

What this festival offers, ultimately, is the older technology of the spoken word applied to places that have been accumulating stories for two thousand years. The Var in August is loud with tourism; these evenings are quiet by design. A storyteller, a courtyard, the smell of thyme and warm stone — and then, afterwards, wine.
