There is a particular quality of light on the Croisette in August — flat, white, almost relentless — that makes the cool interior of La Malmaison feel like a held breath. The building itself, a belle époque villa wedged between the Palais des Festivals and the Majestic, has been receiving art and its admirers for decades, its pale façade unchanged while the boulevard outside reinvents itself every season.
