Why go

  • Curator-led access for under nine euros
  • Rare behind-the-scenes exhibition insight
  • Di Rosa's vivid cross-cultural painting world

There is a particular quality to late afternoon light on the boulevard de la Croisette in August — the way it flattens against the pale stone facades, turns the sea to hammered pewter, and makes everything feel simultaneously languid and alert. At number 47, set back from the promenade's steady procession of linen and sunglasses, La Malmaison offers a different kind of attention. The building itself — a Belle Époque annex of the old Grand Hôtel, rescued and repurposed as a contemporary art centre — has the pleasing logic of a place that was always meant to hold beautiful things.

On Wednesday 26 August 2026 at 17:00, that logic extends to something rarer than a gallery visit: a guided walk through the current exhibition led by its own curator. The session lasts one hour and is capped at the kind of scale that allows genuine conversation rather than the performance of it.

'Mirages du monde' — The Exhibition in Context

The visit takes place within the framework of Mirages du monde, les peintures d'Hervé Di Rosa, on view at La Malmaison from 17 July to 8 November 2026. Di Rosa is one of the founding figures of the Figuration Libre movement — the loose, irreverent tendency that emerged in France in the early 1980s as a riposte to the austerity of conceptual art. Alongside Robert Combas and others, he brought back colour, narrative, cartoon logic, and a frank pleasure in popular culture at a moment when such things were considered, in certain circles, professionally embarrassing.

What followed was a career of restless geographic curiosity. Di Rosa has worked across continents — Mexico, Senegal, China, Brazil, among others — absorbing local visual traditions and folding them into a language that remains unmistakably his own: dense, chromatic, populated by hybrid figures that seem to belong to no single mythology and all of them at once. The title Mirages du monde — 'mirages of the world' — captures something of this: images that shimmer between the familiar and the foreign, that promise a place just beyond what you can fully name.

What the Curator Brings

A well-produced exhibition catalogue can tell you what an artist intended. A curator standing in front of the work can tell you what happened instead — the negotiations, the surprises, the painting that arrived looking nothing like the reproduction, the decision made in the final week of installation that changed the rhythm of an entire room.

'La commissaire' here is not a ceremonial title. It is the person who made the editorial and spatial choices that determine what you see and in what order you see it.

The session is structured to offer clés de lecture — reading keys, in the French phrase — for the works on show, alongside a glimpse of the exhibition's behind-the-scenes process. This is the kind of access that tends to be available only to collectors, press, or the professionally connected. For just over eight euros, it is available to anyone who books a place.

Pricing is straightforward:

  • Tarif plein:** 8,50 €
  • Reduced rate (18–25, Cannes Pass Culture, Cannes Seniors Le Club): 5,50 €
  • Reduced rate (under 18, students, job seekers, disability card holders and one companion): 2 €

La Malmaison sits at the Croisette end of Cannes — the end that faces the Palais des Festivals, the old port, the market at Forville. Arriving at five in the afternoon, after the heat of the day has begun to release its grip, is not a bad way to spend an August Wednesday on the Côte d'Azur. The sea will still be there when the hour is done.
