Why go

  • A classified 1990 monument, rarely open
  • Two intimate guided sessions, one hour each
  • Terraced gardens with Esterel and island views

There is a part of Cannes that the film festival crowds never reach. Turn away from the Croisette, climb past the villas half-swallowed by bougainvillea, and follow the impasse off avenue Fiesole until the road simply ends. Here, on the heights above the bay, Villa Domergue sits in a particular kind of silence — the silence of a place that has always been slightly apart from the world below it.

The villa was the home and studio of Jean-Gabriel Domergue, the French painter and poster artist whose elongated, elegantly stylised portraits of women became one of the defining visual signatures of interwar Paris. He and his wife Odette built the house in the Florentine manner, with terraced gardens that descend the hillside in a series of stone balustrades, fountains, and sculpted figures. The views across the Esterel and out to the Îles de Lérins are the kind that make you understand, in a very immediate way, why people have been coming to this coast for centuries.

Classified as a monument historique since 1990, the villa is not a place you can simply wander into. It opens to the public once a month, in two guided sessions, and the format has remained deliberately intimate. On Saturday, 3 October 2026, those sessions take place at 15h00 and 16h00, each lasting one hour.

What the Hour Contains

A guide accompanies each group through the house and gardens, tracing the arc of Domergue's career and the couple's life on the hill. The rooms retain much of their original character — the canvases, the objects, the atmosphere of a working artist's home rather than a reconstructed museum. Outside, the gardens move at their own pace: Mediterranean planting, the sound of water, the particular quality of afternoon light that falls on the Côte d'Azur in early October, when the summer visitors have thinned and the air has lost its August weight.

October is, in many ways, the most honest month on this coast. The sea is still warm enough to swim, the light is lower and more golden, and the towns return to something closer to their actual selves. Cannes in early autumn has a different texture to Cannes in July — quieter, more considered, easier to read.

'Between art, nature and heritage' — the official description of Villa Domergue is spare, but it is accurate.

Practical Matters

Reservation is required and must be made online in advance — the sessions are small and fill accordingly. Pricing is structured with some care:

  • Full price: €8.50
  • Reduced (ages 18–25, Cannes Pass Culture holders, Cannes Seniors Le Club members): €5.50
  • Reduced (under 18, students, job-seekers, holders of a disability card and one companion): €2.00

The address — 15 avenue Fiesole, Impasse Fiesole — signals something about the nature of the place before you arrive. An impasse, in French, is a dead end. In this case, it is also an arrival.

For those who know Cannes only as a backdrop for celebrity and spectacle, Villa Domergue offers a different proposition: an hour inside a house where someone actually lived and worked, on a hillside that has changed less than almost anywhere else in the city. The guided format means you leave knowing more than you arrived with — about Domergue, about the Riviera's artistic history, about the particular ambition it takes to build something beautiful and then give it to the hill.
